A dilemma.

The best font for the redesign of my little blog here is clearly Myriad Pro. Clearly. However, it’s (clearly) a commercial font, which means that I would get myself in some big trouble if I used it in an @font-face definition.

Which brings me to a dilemma. Do I go ahead and use Myriad and possibly face legal repercussions, do I man up and use standard fonts like Helvetica (ugh), or do I go find some free font somewhere that doesn’t look like total ass? (Just in case you were unaware, that last one is impossible.)

Let’s go through the pros and cons of each, shall we? First up is just using Myriad. Pros? Site looks fucking gorgeous. Cons? Have to wait for Safari 3.1.3 for Apple to fix certain @font-face related bugs (already fixed in the latest WebKit nightlys). Oh, and I might get ass-raped by Adobe’s lawyers.

Using standard fonts… well, at least they’ll work everywhere. Well, maybe not everywhere, but most computers will render it as wanted. However, the site will not look as nice (and I wouldn’t be using @font-face, one of the coolest new features of CSS3).

Free fonts… ugh. At least there’d be no legal trouble, but the site would look like ass. I’ve already tried one or two that look fine in a preview (namely Delicious by exljbris, which I must say, definitely does look fine), but the font looks too tall, and thus it looks like ass. (Wider characters, please.)

So, Internet, what do you think? (And if you do know of any good free fonts that work as body text and DON’T look like ass, please tell me so that I don’t have to be looking at Lucida anymore.)

About

I like music a little too much. Half of my iTunes library is unlistened to, so I'm on a quest to listen to an album of new-to-me music every day, and along the way I'll be sharing some of my favorites, both modern and classic.
